La carta más antigua de San Valentín, fecha de 1416, cuando el Duque francés, Carlos de Orleans, apresado en la Torre de Londres después de la batalla de Azincourt, le mandó una larga misiva a su esposa Bonne de Armagnac.
En la antigua Roma, se celebraba una fiesta pagana llamada Lupercalia, un ritual dedicado a la fertilidad.
